Carpets and rugs suitable for underfloor heating

If you are thinking of installing underfloor heating in your home and you want to place carpets or rugs suitable for underfloor heating on top, there are some important considerations to take into account to ensure the proper functioning of the system and avoid problems.

TOG VALUE

The TOG value indicates the thermal resistance of a carpet or rug and how much heat it can retain. A high TOG value means that the carpet or rug retains more heat and therefore can negatively affect the efficiency of the radiant floor.

In general, it is recommended to choose a carpet with a TOG value of less than 1.5 to ensure the efficiency of the radiant floor. However, it is important to keep in mind that the TOG value is not the only factor to consider and other factors such as the thickness, backing and material of the carpet or rug need to be evaluated.

TOG is the English version of thermal resistance.

TOG = 10x Thermal resistance

Ex . Thermal Resistance = 0.09

TOG = 0.09 *10 = 0.9.

CARPET THICKNESS

The thicker the carpet, the higher its TOG value. As mentioned above, it is advisable to choose a carpet with a low TOG value to avoid hindering the transmission of heat from the radiant floor to the interior of the room.

As the thickness increases, the efficiency of the radiant floor is reduced, as the layer of air trapped between the carpet and the floor reduces heat transfer. It is recommended that the total thickness of the carpet or rug should not exceed 1.5 cm.

CARPET OR RUG MATERIAL

The material from which the carpet is made also affects the TOG value. Natural materials, such as wool and cotton, have a higher TOG value than synthetics, such as nylon or polyester. However, some natural materials may be more conductive and transmit heat better.

CARPET BACKING OR BACKING

It is also important to ensure that the carpet or rug is not overly padded or has an insulating backing that can block heat transfer. In general, it is best to opt for rugs or carpets with a thin, breathable underlay that allows heat to flow freely. A thick, padded underlay will increase the TOG value, while a thin, breathable underlay will reduce the TOG value.

CARPET INSTALLATION

In addition, it is important to make sure that the carpet or rug is installed correctly and is not “loose”, as this can cause wrinkles and pressure points that hinder heat transfer.

By following these recommendations, you can enjoy comfortable underfloor heating in combination with a carpet or rug that brings warmth and comfort to your home.
